ARTICLE: Strata to Build the Largest Battery Energy Storage System in North America

5-1/2 years ago, residents of Oxnard, California learned they were to lose a large swath of their cherished shoreline—to a utility-scale fossil-fuel power plant. The proposed gas-fired “peaker plant” was to be commissioned to supply intermittent electricity during peak-demand times of the day to this coastal town.

This year the residents of Oxnard discovered that they’d get to keep their shoreline, and keep it free from the proposed gas-powered plant. Instead, their public utility—Southern California Edison—opted to engage an off-site, clean-energy, Battery Electric Storage System to provide the electricity needed during peak power consumption.
